AGRICULTURE

Agriculture has been the chief source of income and main occupation for the state of Nagaland. Rice is the major food crop and staple food of the state covering 70 percent of the net cultivated area registering a production of 4,54,190 MT during 2014-15 and a targeted production of 4,82,080 MT in 2015-16. Other important crops are maize, linseed, potato, pulses, soya bean, sugarcane, jute, gram, cotton, castor etc. Agriculture is the largest employer of the workforce in Nagaland and keeps on to form an indispensable source of livelihood for the people. Shifting and terrace cultivation practices are widely practiced in the State.

The Government of Nagaland has introduced suitable technologies like quality inputs, farm mechanization, infrastructure support, market linkages, value addition and extension services in order to focus on ‘ Hill Agriculture’.

Horticulture

Horticulture is another propitious sector for the state regarding employment generation and income addition together with reducing nutritional poverty. The state’s different agro- climatic zones are convenient to conditions that are well suited for the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices, plantation crops, medicinal and aromatic and other horticultural crops. The state is also rich in spices as spices like Naga Chilly, large cardamom, ginger, and turmeric can be found in the state.
